Background: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is one of the most important clinical problems of women referring to Ob-Gyn clinics. Endometrial adenocarcinoma is considered as one of the major causes of AUB. D & C is performed for patients older than 35 years with AUB and it may lead to a hysterectomy for the patient. This study was undertaken to investigate the histopathological findings in patients suffering from AUB. Methods: In a retrospective study from 1995 to 2002, All data of women with AUB who had referred to Ob-Gyn clinic of Faghihi Hospital of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences were collected and were statistically analyzed for histopathological findings. Results: Among 208 cases of AUB,185 women had abnormal premenopausal and 23 patients postmenopausal bleeding. All cases had undergone hysterectomy. The endometrial histopathological finding included prolifeactive ones in premenopause and atrophic ones in postmenopause. Adenomyosis in premenopause was the most common one. No abnormal finding was observed in ovary, and no malignancy was seen in premenopause bleeding cases. Conclusion: A screening in women older than 35 years in a larger population may clarify the difference in premenopause and postmenopause bleedings.
