Background: Hospital-based cancer registries contribute to patient care by providing readily accessible information on the subjects with cancer, the treatment they received and its result. The data can be used to a certain extent, for epidemiological purposes. Cancer is already a significant health problem in several developing countries and cancer registries provide the only opportunity of properly assessing the extent and nature of the cancer burden in developing countries. This hospital-based study was performed to determine all types of cancers prevalent in Fars Province, Southern Iran in relation to age and sex. Methods: From Oct. 2001 to Oct. 2003, among 1914 cases of all types of cancer registered in Fars Province, Southeastern Iran, all were differentiated in relation to type, age and sex. Results: The prevalence of all cancers were determined by age and sex as follows: Breast (585), digestive (506), nervous (180), endocrine (127), urinary (155), respiratory (135), reproductive (83), skin (49), hepatobiliary (36), ocular (11), spleen (1), vascular (1) and the results for histopathological study were as follows: Bone marrow (74), lymph node (260), bone (81), lung (70), unknown (66), soft tissue (48), abdomen (14), PNS (10), mediastinum (8), tonsil (5), connective tissue (5), ear (4), pelvis (4), and retropritoneum (2). Conclusion: The differences compared to global standard method may be due to ethnic and environmental factors.
